Ingredients & Inspiration
If you’ve never heard the term ‘kasha’ before, it can refer to porridge made from various grains, or prepared buckwheat porridge. It’s commonly eaten as a breakfast or side dish in European countries like Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Russia. And for good reason! It’s high in fibre and protein and has a lovely chewy, hearty texture and can be prepared sweet or savoury.
Toasted buckwheat groats have a super pleasant roasty-toasty aroma and flavour and are a little earthy tasting, too. Paired with sweet apples, cinnamon and raisins, they’re a stellar combination that you have just to try.

To make Apple Cinnamon Kasha you only need a handful of healthy, plant-based ingredients:
- toasted buckwheat groats (kasha)
- crisp apples
- raisins
- maple syrup
- cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
- salt
- chopped nuts or seeds, for topping
- plant milk, for serving
How to Make Apple Cinnamon Kasha
Just like cooking a pot of oatmeal, all you have to do to make Apple Cinnamon Kasha is cook it on the stove in a pot of water.

Instructions
- Pour the water into a small pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Add the buckwheat groats, chopped apples, salt, cinnamon, maple syrup and raisins and stir to combine.
- Next, turn the heat down to low, cover the pot and cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Occasionally stir until the buckwheat groats are cooked and tender, but still have some bite to them. You don’t want them to be mushy.
- Serve into bowls and top with plant milk, nut butter, and chopped nuts or seeds, and enjoy!

Cozy Up With Some Kasha
If you’ve been looking for an alternative to plain old oatmeal in the morning, I think you’ll love this Apple Cinnamon Kasha! It’s perfect for meal prep, and can easily be halved or double to make more or less servings. Buckwheat is such an underrated grain that I think deserves more love!
